Obtaining Unique Tax Reference (UTR) numbers
HMRC are reminding agents and advisers that they are unable to give out Unique Tax Reference numbers (UTRs) over the telephone. This is due to HMRC’s responsibilities to protect customer information.
HMRC appreciates that there may be exceptional circumstances when an agent does not have the information in their files and cannot obtain a UTR from their client. In these exceptional circumstances agents can contact the Agent Dedicated Line on 0845 366 7855 for assistance. As usual, agents must have formal authorisation in place for their client (form 64-8 or online), and pass all relevant security questions, before HMRC can issue a reminder of the UTR by letter.
HMRC say they will not confirm a UTR either by telephone or fax.
