HMRC’s online security procedures and advice
As more and more taxpayers communicate and transact with HMRC the chances of fraud increase. HMRC have issued an update on how they monitor online data to keep it safe. This also includes a warning that taxpayers should be vigilant and guard against fraudulent activity. For example taxpayers should keep their log-in details and passwords secure and regularly updated.
HMRC’s protection measures include firewall protection, security certificates, secure log-on and a time-out measure which automatically signs users out of the online system after 15 idle minutes.
Taxpayers are also reminded of the importance of having up-to-date anti-virus protection, a personal firewall which helps block unauthorised use, anti-spy software and that they should keep their internet software updated.
HMRC will continue to issue updates where new frauds are detected.
