National insurance number cards
As part of its cost saving measures, HMRC are to stop sending plastic national insurance number cards. The plastic card is to be replaced by a letter stating an individual’s national insurance number.
Since October 2010, HMRC no longer send replacement national insurance number cards but will provide a written confirmation letter stating an individual’s national insurance number upon request.
With effect from July 2011, HMRC will also stop issuing cards to adults who apply for a national insurance number for the first time. Instead a letter quoting the new national insurance number will be sent from the Department for Work and Pensions (Jobcentre Plus).
The practice of sending a national insurance card to individuals approaching their 16th birthday will continue for the time being although this is expected to stop later in the year. It is important that individuals keep a record of their national insurance number on file.
