Partnerships and Unique Tax Reference (UTR) numbers
HMRC have published an update relevant to partnerships that are waiting on a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for non-UK resident partners.
HMRC issued guidance in early 2009 that substitute or dummy UTRs would no longer be acceptable and that all partnerships and their members were required to use the appropriate UTR when filing partnership returns.
However, following representation by the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA) HMRC agreed an exception for investment partnerships with non-UK resident partners as an interim measure. The exception allows paper partnership tax returns to be submitted with missing UTRs for non-UK resident partners.
HMRC have confirmed that the exception process will continue to apply for the tax year ending 5 April 2011.
