Submitting VAT returns online
HMRC have issued fresh guidance on how to submit VAT returns online.
The guidance includes information on what figures should be included in each of the boxes 1 to 9 on a VAT return. It also confirms which boxes within an online VAT return are calculated automatically.
If you submit your own VAT returns you should ensure that no box is left blank. With online VAT returns especially use a minus sign before the figure for negative amounts and 0.00 in boxes where you might have put ‘none’ or ‘not applicable’ on a paper VAT return.
Since 1 April 2010, all VAT registered businesses with a turnover exceeding £100,000 and all newly VAT registered businesses have been required to file VAT returns and make payments online.
If we do not file your VAT returns you can do so using either HMRC’s free online software or using commercially produced software. However you can only file online after you have registered and enrolled for the VAT Online service.
