June Budget – Landline duty cancelled
The Chancellor has announced that the previous Government’s proposed landline duty has been cancelled. The duty was expected to take effect from 1 October 2010 and was intended to fund the roll-out of super fast broadband across the UK.
It had been predicted that the rate of £0.50p per line per month payable by telephone operating companies would ultimately have been passed down to end users.
The Chancellor announced in his Budget speech that the proposed landline duty was an ‘archaic tax’ and that he was ‘happy to abolish this new duty before it is even introduced’.
