June Budget – Health in Pregnancy Grant
The Health in Pregnancy Grant which was introduced to much fanfare by the previous Labour Government is to be abolished. The first payments were made in early 2009.
The grant was a one-off payment of £190 to all expectant mothers that was made irrespective of income. It was designed to enable pregnant women to meet some of their needs during pregnancy and to make essential purchases before the baby’s arrival.
The coalition Government is to abolish the grant with effect from 1 January 2011. Women who reach the 25th week of pregnancy before 1 January 2011 will still be entitled to the grant providing they satisfy the conditions of the grant.
