HMRC debt collection
HMRC have indicated that they will be piloting the use of private debt collection agencies to help manage debt collection.
The trial will cover both businesses and individuals across a range of taxes. HMRC claim that the use of external debt management agencies is consistent with that used by other government departments.
HMRC will notify relevant businesses and individuals before passing any debt to private agencies. This notice will offer the opportunity for taxpayers to pay any amounts outstanding or reach a payment agreement with HMRC.
The pilot will run for six months and HMRC invites comments from taxpayers. During the pilot the private agencies will only be involved in ‘resolution work’ and their services will not include any home, face to face visits or litigation work as part of the pilot. Comments can be sent to HMRC by email.
