Final Reminder for Self Assessment
HMRC are reminding taxpayers that the deadline for submitting 2007/8 tax returns is 31 January 2009. Taxpayers should also be aware that payment of any tax due should be made by the last working day of the month, Friday 30 January.
All filings must now be made online as the date for submitting paper returns has already passed. Any returns that are filed after the 31 January 2009 deadline are subject to an automatic penalty of £100 unless all outstanding tax is paid by 30 January.
HMRC have also announced that the number of returns submitted online has now exceeded 3 million and outnumbers paper submissions for the first time. An interesting fact included in the press release is that 620 filings were made on Christmas Day!
The Self Assessment helpline is now open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm on 0845 9000 444. Further information is also available on the HMRC website.
The press release also confirmed that new tax codes are currently being mailed for the 2009/10 tax year. Tax payers who believe there is an error with the tax code should check with us or the HMRC office quoted on the letter.
