Filing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms
With effect from 4 July 2011, the use of the new style stamp duty land tax (SDLT) forms will become compulsory. In order to prepare for the new forms, changes are being made to HMRC’s SDLT IT system and taxpayers will be unable to submit online returns from 25 June 2011 until 4 July 2011.
HMRC have said that they will be sympathetic to appeals against penalties where an online return was late due to the system shutdown. If the return is filed without unreasonable delay on or after 4 July any penalty issued by HMRC will be cancelled. However, if the return would have been late even if it could have been filed during shutdown, the normal penalty rules will apply.
SDLT returns submitted from 4 July 2011 without the new required information or using the old style forms will be rejected.
