Export Declarations
HMRC have identified that a significant number of export declarations are being completed incorrectly. The error that has been identified relates to the incorrect use of the “GB” code in box 17a of the form (Country of Destination).
From 1 January 2009, HRMC is requesting that relevant businesses and freight handlers correctly complete export declarations. The use of “GB” as a Country of Destination is incorrect and it is important that the correct destination country is identified on the form.
From 1 January, incorrect declarations will not be released until a valid Country of Declaration has been selected. Errors will be identified using the Customs Handling of Import Export Freight (CHIEF) system.
Relevant businesses are reminded that they should put in place systems controls as soon as possible to ensure this error is not repeated.
