Customs – statistical threshold
With effect from 1 January 2011 the statistical threshold in the UK has increased from £600 to £867. The statistical threshold is used when deciding whether a simplified export declaration can be used.
The statistical threshold is also used for Merchandise in Baggage (MIB) imports and the increased threshold will mean that fewer low value imports will require a customs declaration on a C88.
The change in the threshold is a result of a decision by HMRC to review the sterling equivalent of the €1000 value defined in EU legislation. Going forward, changes to the threshold will take effect from 1 January each year (based on the euro exchange rate) and remain fixed for the year.
